Celebrate Sarasota Jungle Gardens 80 Years!

One of Florida’s oldest continuous attractions, Sarasota Jungle Gardens, is celebrating its 80th anniversary on December 31. Visitors who purchase one full-priced admission will receive half off another admission on that day.
Jungle Gardens officially opened to the public on New Year’s Eve, 1939 after several years of development by a local newspaper man who wanted to turn the “impenetrable swamp” into a beautiful botanical garden. Soon, the paradise began to attract numerous people daily who would want to wander through the manicured jungle. Today’s wandering pathways generally follow the same trails that were laid out in shell in the 1930s. Notable visitors include Albert Einstein and frequent visitor Eleanor Roosevelt.
Last year, the Garden’s famous 82-year-old iconic performing Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Frosty Sr., retired from his daily star performing role after more than 40 years. Frosty Sr. had been a fixture at the Gardens, delighting visitors with his high-wire unicycle act and scooter riding skills and still resides in the Gardens. Frosty came to Sarasota Jungle Gardens in the mid-70’s. He was originally trained by prisoners at the Folsom State Prison in California as part of an inmate rehabilitation program. Frosty has appeared on the Ed Sullivan TV show in the 1960s where he performed his high-wire unicycle act.
Ring in the New Year and celebrate a special piece of Sarasota history with a visit to Sarasota Jungle Gardens. The gardens are located at 3701 Bay Shore Road, Sarasota, FL 34234.
Families can enjoy feeding flamingos, holding alligators, watching interactive animal shows and exploring acres of jungle paradise in the heart of Sarasota.
Admission is free for children three and under; $12.99 for children 4-16; $17.99 for adults and $16.99 for seniors 65 and older; taxes are not included. The Gardens are open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Visit the Sarasota Jungle Gardens web site at www.sarasotajunglegardens.com or call (941)355-5305 for more information.
      About Sarasota Jungle Gardens
Sarasota Jungle Gardens features acres of lush tropical vegetation, winding jungle trails and entertaining, educational bird and reptile shows throughout the day. Established in 1939, Sarasota Jungle Gardens is home to native and exotic animals, including birds of prey, many different species of parrots and macaws, free-roaming flamingos, primates, small mammals, dozens of snakes, lizards, iguanas, crocodiles and other reptiles. Visitors have a unique opportunity to interact with and experience the animals, many of which found their home at Sarasota Jungle Gardens through approved private donations or through state and federal agencies that wanted to ensure these animals would live in a safe environment and permanent, caring home. All revenue goes directly to the care and enrichment of the resident animals.
